The village of Lliber in the Jalon valley was having a problem with the area where they had their bin collection .It had become a mess and people from far and near were dumping their waste of all types in the area .Now the residents of Cami D’Aixa in Lliber have had their complaints to the Town Hall heard and the area has been cleaned .There were building materials , garden rubbish , food waste which was attracting vermin .It was not a good sight to see .

Since the cleaning has been done a local couple have taken it upon themselves to make the area even more attractive .They are generating a garden area around the bins in the hope that it will encourage others to care for it too .Other neighbours are impressed with the enterprise of the couple , who have planted yucca trees and other small plants .

Previously the area was a recycling and rubbish area but it gave a very bad impression to the village in general .Now this care and attention has made an impressive difference .

The healthcare coverage for early retirees in the Valencia region has always been a beacon for British expats .They could acquire their SIP card and they would receive their care .Then a year ago there was a proposal between the British Embassy consular officials and Valencian regional officials on the matter of this contraversial coverage .This scheme has benefited  early retiree’s whose E106 has run out .The Valencian government wanted to stop it .They have suggested an alternative wher people pay a monthly quota and then they can have access to the national health service .

A year down the line no decision has been made about this scheme .They are still awaiting some decision by the Valencian government .It could be that they are attempting to work out just what someone has to pay .If the ” quota ” is too large then people may just as well pay for private insurance .

Altea was the venue for a meeting between Commerce Councillors from Altea , Benidorm , Callosa , Finestrat, Gata and Jalon .They met at the Casa de Cultura in Altea last week to discuss ways in which commerce in the Marina Alta and Baja can be increased .

This was the second such meeting held by the commerce councillors and they have been discussing the setting up of trade fairs and similar campaigns .The Altea councillor feels that there needs to be greater cooperation between towns in the region to stimulate business .It is also important for each town to know how others operate and to modify their own to be in tune with others if necessary .

In Benidorm they are about to launch a new debit card for use in commercial outlets in the town .It would be La Caixa that would produce the card and now final discussions are taking place with the commercial outlets .The aim is to get people to shop locally and gain discounts for doing so , therefore stimulating the local economy .The cards would also be used for services and in such places as restaurants .

If you have seen the sort of advertisement ob buses in certain cities of the UK would they make you rush out to book a flight to the Costa Blanca .I fear that the answer would be “No”.Yet the provincial tourism board has launched a campaign in 10 British cities on over 500 buses to promote the Costa Blanca.

Birmingham , Leicester , Bristol , Leeds , Liverpool, London , Manchester , Sheffield all have these advertisements .Thy say ” Costa Blanca , the space in your life ” and there is a picture of a beach .The words ” Costa Blanca are so small in relation to everything else in the picture .I thought that it was an advert for ” My Space ” when I first saw it .If the focus was to draw attention to those magic words ” Costa Blanca ” then it has failed .

They want to get Brits to continue to travel to the Costa Blanca , well this isn’t going to do it .Using buses is a good idea but they pass very quickly and therefore it is vital that the words tht you want people to read are bold and the image of beaches produce a yearning on a chilly summer day in the Uk .This photograph would not do that .

Everyone realises that the rate of exchange and the recession together is affecting the tourist industry out here and promotions like this can be vital but you have got to get it right .Brits make up almost 60% of the international tourism on the Costa Blanca and 46% of all passengers passing through Alicante airport .The Costa Blanca cannot afford to allow this market to dry up .One wonders what this campaign has cost to promote and just what return will be gained from the investment .
