The America’s Cup will be raced for in Valencia next year. The Velas i Vents building is going to be painted ,the public area lighting systems are going to be improved and there will be alterations made to accommodate the huge yachts. The course for the 33rd America’s Cup will be much larger than it was for the 32nd.With the latter there was a distance of 5 nautical miles between the buoys.
For the next races this distance will be increased to 20 nautical miles with the total course area at 40 nautical miles. The human eye ,normally, can see to a distance of 18 nautical miles which gives some impression of the distances involed here. There will certainly be two races and if each wins one then there will be a third race where the course for the first race will be slightly altered.
Overall the courses will run from the northern coastal town of Sagunto to the southern end of the beach at Tavernes de la Valadigna.
Greenhouse gas emissions are big news around the world and an EU list has put Spanish emissions at the top of a European league table.Spain has had the least success at cutting greenhouse gases. In order to meet the Kyoto targets Spain will have to cut emissions by 25% by 2012.
In 1990 the EU allowed Spain to increase its emissions by 15% because of its poor economy.Sadly by 2007 the economy was booming because of the construction industry and emissions had gone up by over 50%.The only way that Spain can hit its targets is to buy up the credits made by countries which have already met theirs. This doesn’t seem quite fair when one country has worked hard and another has done next to nothing.Madrid has recently purchased 25 million euros worth of credit from Poland. The UK,France and Germany have all met their targets. They meet between them 40% of the total necessary for Kyoto, conequently the EU is on track to meet the overall targets.Soon the Copenhagen conference will take place to seek agreement on what happens after 2013.
The education of the masses is also of huge importance here as if each and every household were told just how they could each do their “bit” towards cutting greenhouse gases then the population as a whole would have a massive effect.
British airways and the Spanish airline Iberia are to merge. They have reached the first stages of an agreement on the merger. The European Commission has to agree and then Iberia’s chairman and BA’s chief executive will fill the same roles in the holding company which will be called TopCo.
This is the end of 16 months of discussions between seniour staff plus the approval of separate board meetings.Iberia will have a 45% shareholding and they claim that this will save them 500 million euros a year.BA already owns 13.5% of Iberia and in turn Iberia has a 10% stake in BA.They already have an agreement which means that they can sell seats on each others planes. It is not yet known where Vueling,a cheap flight company in which Iberia has a 45% stake, fits into the scheme.
Each airline will maintain its own branding and operations within TopCo.Iberia will continue to have its board meetings in Madrid. The financial and operating headquarters will be in London. This merger makes the company the third largest in Europe after Air France/KLM and Lufthansa. The chief executive of BA has said that there will be staffing cuts in the interest of securing many thousands of other jobs. Both airlines are running at big losses.

An arrest took place in Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol last week which involved a British man who had been attempting to set up sex with an underage child. The investigation has been ongoing since July.Police were tipped off by a prostitute and then the search for the man began. The man had contacted the prostitute for her to set up a sexual encounter with a child with him watching. He wanted a child of between 10 and 12 years old. When they persued their investigations they narrowed it down to a 47 year old Briton. They now believe that they have enough evidence to show that he was attempting to arrange underage sex.So they detained him before he was able to take his plans any further.
In a totally unrelated incident the male partner of another man reported to the police that he believed that this 58 year old man was in possession of indecent photographs of children .The children were aged 7 to 9 years old. This man was also arrested in Torremolinos when the police discovered the images in the man’s flat.
