The Guardia Civil in Alicante has arrested a six strong gang for stealing 12 kilometres of copper wire. The theft caused chaos on the A-7 and the AP-7 in Crevillente,Almoradi,Rojales,San Miguel de salinas.San Javier and Cartagena.
The raids to acquire the copper wire took place at night and put the motorway lights out of action causing extreme danger to motorists. The wire had a value of 150,000 euros.
The first wave of thefts took place last August. They were well organised and while one did the stealing the others watched out for the police. The wire would be sold in another province to avoid detection. The gang was also charged with thefts worth 20,000 euros from El Hondo natural park. They are also suspected of stealing a petrol card from a lorry and filling cannisters with 3000 litres of fuel which was then sold to the black market.
Two of the men involved were arrested in 2007 after a wave of copper wire thefts .Some of the El Hondo goods were discovered when the home of the gang leader was raided.
The PSOE Party in the Murcia regional government has presented an official petition to the parliament to create a law to legalise assisted suicide. The Andalucia parliament passed a similar law last week. They feel that the decision of the patient and the freedom to do so is paramount.
The law would preserve the dignity and the rights of patients and also offer legal back-up to the doctors and nurses and families who care for the patients. The Murcia government will say that it already has a “Registro de Instrucciones Previas” where the decions of patients can be placed.Almost 2000 people have already registered their requests for certain interventions which they do not wantif they are unable to make decisions for themselves. The law passed in Andalucia enables patients to reject a series of treatments in certain circumstances.
The Costa Blanca relies on tourism and now shops and other businesses must decide if they are going to raise their prices becauseof IVA tax hikes. The IVA taxes go up in July and now travel associations have decided to take on the government about the increases.
At a meeting in Madrid it has been said that the government must be made aware of the grave consequences that these rises will have on the travel industry. The tourism industry accounts for 10% of the Gross National Product. It could force closure of many businesses as sales drop and add even more to the unemployed register.
Just over a year ago the sector employed 54,000 people but since then more than 6000 have lost their jobs.As the sales of package holidays drops even more then even more jobs will go.In some areas the IVA increase will not be passed on to the consumer. The owners of the clothing stores Zara and Massimo Dutti have made such a decision. They have opted to make savings in other areas of their businesses.Carrefour, the French owned hypermarket has also announced that it will not pass on the increases. Many on the Costa Blanca have still to decide what they are going to do.
