It is mainly in Cataluña at the moment that several town halls have decided to ban the wearing of the burqa.
Now central government has confirmed that it too will bring in a new law of religious freedom which will lead to the burqa being banned in certain public places.
The Minister for Justice has said that security is the main reason for introducing the law.It will ban any clothing or headgear which impedes identification in a public place.
He added that it was difficult to reconcile any human dignity with clothing such as the burqa,a garment which covers the entire human form by some Muslim women.
Spain is still a mainly Catholic country but 2 years ago the government announced that it was planning a law to give more religious freedom. There is an estimated 1 million Muslims in the population of 47 million Spaniards.
At the moment Lerida and El Venrell have banned the burqa in municipal buildings,Barcelona has announced plans to do so,so has Coin in Malaga.Tarragona and Gerona are considering the matter.
In this day and age it does make sense to ban the use of the veil when a woman has to communicate with others who are not of her faith. In schools,in courts of law and the like.To be able to see the face of the other person is part of this culture and consequently if Muslims choose to live in a Catholic country then they should obey the laws of that land.Western women have to cover thes and arms when they visit a Muslim country.u
Families are often peculiar groups of people and last week in Torrevieja there was a good example of family disloyalty.A man took his 61 year old mother to Torrevieja hospital, suffering from malnutrition and dehydration after she had stopped eating. It appears that she had been brought to Spain by the son and had then refused to eat.
The woman was in hospital for 5 days and had recovered enough to be sent home. She was taken to the home of the son in Torrevieja but he would not take her in.He sent her back to hospital. As she was then in good health the hospital contacted the police who returned her to her son.She was turned away once again.
The police then filed an official complaint od abandonment of a family member. The son was due to appear in court but failed to turn up.The lady was finally repatriated to the UK by the British consulate in Alicante. It seems that the son wanted no contact with his mother or the hospital. The man is now to be taken before a judge in July,if he does not turn up then a search and arrest warrant will be given.

The San Juan beach parties just south of Barcelona at Castelldefels began with a terrible accident.Twelve people were killed and another 14 were seriously injured when they were hit by a train.
The accident happened at about 11.30 .A large group of peoplehad just disembarked from a train and instead of crossing the line by a footbridge they crossed by a short-cut to the beach for their party. It appears that they were impatient to get there.
As they were crossing a high speed train that had originally left Alicante and was on its way to barcelona via Valencia ,whistled through the station hitting the people directly. The train was thought to have been travelling at 150 kph.It is possible that the death list will increase as three are in intensive care in a critical condition.
The impact on the people was so great that it may take a long time to identify them .The regional and national governments are offering the families of the victims, many of whom were quite young, psychological support.
This ,however is a totally unnecessary accident.People know that they ought not cross the railway lines in this way and yet they are willing to take what turned out to be a fatal risk.
The young parents of a 2 month old baby from Torrevieja have been found guilty of child murder. The British couple face 19 years in prison. The baby died on March 17 2008 in their Torrevieja home.
The two doctors who carried out the post mortem discovered that the baby died a violent death and had two skull fractures. They had occurred due to a fall and not because of blows to the head.
The doctors also stated that the baby was in a bad way generally and was suffering malnutrition. There were no other signs of beatings. However the father of the child did admit to hitting the baby and said that his partner did too.
The mother insists that she did not harm the child and that she and the baby were victims of abuse by her partner. The father has suffered a mental condition and that together with the use of drugs and alcohol ,he says, made him do what he did.
A judge in Elche court will now pass a sentence on the couple.
