Old Bridge, Ronda, Andalucia, Spain

Ronda is one of the oldest towns in Spain, and is perhaps most famous for its dramatic river gorge, which separates the old and new parts of the town, the Puente Nuevo bridge, and it´s bull ring.

Ronda is in Malaga province about 60 miles from the city of Malaga, and has a population of approximately 35,000. It was settled originally by Celts who called it Arunda, a name which still appears today in place names, then by the Phoenicians who built the amphitheatre at Acinipo at Ronda la Vieja or Old Ronda. Present Ronda is of Roman origins, and was designated a city during the reign of Julius Caesar. In the 5th century AD Ronda was conquered by the Suebi, and then reconquered the following century by the Eastern Roman Empire under whose rule Acinipo was abandoned. It was later captured by the Visigoth king Leovigild, and it remained controlled by the Visigoths until 713, when it fell to the Arabs who named it Izn-Rand Onda (city of the castle). The Islamic domination ending in 1485, when it was conquered by the Marquis of Cadiz after a siege of the town, after which, many of the city´s old buildings were adapted for Christian purposes. The Spanish Inquisitions meant that Muslims and Jews living on the peninsula had to leave or convert to Christianity.

Old City View, Ronda, Andalucia, Spain

In the 19th century, the Napoleonic invasion and peninsula war caused considerable suffering, and the population of Ronda was reduced to just 5000 in three years. Ronda area became a base for guerrillas, and bandits, whose infamous activities inspired many authors to write about the area. Much of the population of Ronda emigrated after the Spanish Civil War, which badly affected the city.

Ronda is well worth a visit to see the sights and feel the history. Because of its elevation, (approximately 750 m above sea level), the views from the Puente Nuevo are spectacular, with the bridge towering 120 m above the gorge or Tajo and river below. Another must is the Plaza de Toros (The Bull Ring) de Ronda, the oldest in Spain, and the well preserved Arabic Baths which date from the 13th and 14th centuries. Also of interest is the former town hall which has been converted into a plush hotel, known as the Parador, and is now an excellent place to take refreshments whilst visiting the Tajo.
