Operation CIVAN was launched last August when undercover police in calpe detected a new drug trafficking ring was working in the area .This led to a bar in the town and the seizure of a small quantity of cocaine and drug preparation equipment .Four arrests were made and these led to a second phase of the operation when five properties in Calpe were searched and 3.5 kilos of the drug were found with a number of weapons .Twelve people were arrested of which ten were Venezuelan and two were Spansh .

At the end of January attention turned to Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi and properties there were also searched .This led to the discovery of more cocaine and also the arrest of six Brazilian nationals .The National Police have , they feel , broken up a very organised and very dangerous drug trafficking gang .

Sant Vincent Ferrer school in Teulada celebrated World Peace Day last week .Over 600 children arrived at the town hall square for the celebration .Two members of each group gave a speech with their views on “Peace “.

Pupils held banners with such slogan’s as ” Peace , peace , peace ” ” Peace is the only route ” and  ” In our world there is a place for everyone “.

The speeches were delivered from the town hall balcony and the children addressed such issues as war , race , freedom , terrorism and the main message was that all of these children wanted was a peaceful world .

One child said ” We don’t want wars to happen and innocent lives to be lost and as a family we need to work together to understand that we can be at peace together and learn to forgive , help and love others ”

The morning ended with the children singing and doves being released as a sign of freedom and peace .

If you are a resident of Murcia you will be able to go to yor town hall and submit your questions , queries and complaints to the regional ombudsman .The regional government is about to sign agreements with town councils across the region .People have to submit all of their issues in the town hall’s Ventanilla unica and they will be passed on to the ombudsman in Murcia City .

If you want to drive a jet ski or skipper a pleasure boat then you have to take exams and in Murcia these  are scheduled for March .Applications can be submitted from February 9-23 to the regional transport and harbour department in Murcia City .

A photocopy of the applicants passport , a photocopy of the exam fee invoice and a special medical certificate must be attached to rhe application form .

The exams for yacht skipper and captain will take place in June and November .

San Javier library is going to hold several free activities in Spanish , Arabic and English on the 9, 16 , 23 rd of February at 5.30.Stories will be read on February 9 and on the 16th there will be a play performed and on the 23rd a film will be shown .All of the activities will be supported by volunteers and the activities have been designed to encourage and support reading .It will also encourage their knowledge of a foreign language in a fun environment .

You would be forgiven if you thought that they were members of opposing parties but the Valencia Regional president and the Alicante Provincial President are actually members of the PP.Their supporters make up two factions within the party and that is always going to cause problems .

Now the political infighting has claimed another victim this week when Ibi council sacked one of its own members .One of the councillors had been investigating alleged irregularities in urban development abuses carried out by some of her PP party colleagues .She was dismissed from the council last Monday at a specially convenrd meeting .

It seems that she handed a dossier over last week to party heads at the provincial government detailing serious irregularities in the way the Ibi council had administrated certain development projects .

The dossier is said to show how the council used its power to change the concession to carry out a PAI plan parcial development scheme from one developer to another .Those named in the dossier include the mayoress .

The Fitur tourism fair has been taking place in Madrid and the Provincial President and the Regional President have been sounding very up-beat about the year ahead on the Costa Blanca , saying that the area is well placed to ride out the storm of the economic crisis .

Sadly there was a reality check at the end of last week when it was revealed that hotel bookings for the summer were down by 20% in relation to bookings at the same time last year .

The Valencia president thinks tha the staging of big events is one way of tackling the crisis and he quoted the upcoming Davis Cup match betweeb Spain and serbia which will take place in Benidorm .The  ticket sales will begin this month and the price of the tickets will begin at 90 euros .

Hotel owners feel that a more accurate prediction of the summer will happen after easter .They all feel that a good Easter season will be crucial to 2009 .

Another of the big events was announced this week and the World Medical and Health Games will be based in Alicante this year .The event attracts more than 4000 visitors and competitors take part in 24 different events .
