The former British Ambassador to Spain,Denise Holt, has been appointed to two new roles in the Uk.As of Aprol 1st she will become a member of the board of the new regulator of school examinations and qualifications,OFQUAL.She will also become a member of the Pay Review Board which makes recommendations on the pay of about 1.6 million non-medical staff in the National Health Services.
Dame denise has expressed her delight in becoming so involved with educational standards, which she perceives as being of great importance in the future development of the UK.When speaking of her other role she once again reiterated the importance of the National health service. However this is a very difficult area to negotiate with in most developed countries which have been hit by the recession.
This winter Andalucia has suffered more than most from terrible weather. In particular the rain has been torrential and continuous.Central government has now approved an extension of its aid to the victims of the winter rainfalls. This has been an emergency situation and in 2005 the government in Madrid created a Decree which defined the grants available in the region following natural catastrophes.
The deputy Prime Minister said that by extending the aid it will actually duplicate it as there will also be aid from the Junta de Andalucia too.She wants this assistance to be available as soon as possible .The extension of aid incluses agriculture, roads (particularly rural roads) and of course homes. Many people had to abandon their homes while farmers could be facing ruin to their crops.
The aid will give families 15,ooo euros for total loss of a property,10,000 to do structural repairs or 5000 for other damage.Loss of personal belongings could bring in 2,500 euros.Grants also cover the commercial sector and businesses and of course deaths which have been caused by the storms.Town Halls are also able to make claims for infrastructure damage.
Alicante province is guaranteed water for the next two years. It has been the wettest autumn and winter for over 20 years.Water stocks in all reservoirs are at a peak.Entrepeñas and Buendia reservoirs are holding 832 cubic hectometres ,an amount not seen since 2004.
Consequently there will not be any restrictions for domestic, industrial or agricultural use.The only problems could arise if a network breaks down. This should still be a time when people monitor their water consumption closely .After the two years is up then there could follow a period of drought when water will once again be a huge issue.
Agricultural organisations are saying that these conditions for their produce are the best for years and they want the provincial and regional governments to promote their produce. The south has not only had rain but also extremely cold weather and this will affect their produce production adversely.Planting in Alicante province this spring has been a joy and summer fruits and vegetables will have been given a head start.
